Merry Christmas

I have hellebore blooming... Last year, nobody had any blooms until the middle of January.
It's been a beautiful Autumn, the rains finally came, and with moderate temps, everything has been growing like mad. We're still deeply in a deficit rain-wise, last summer was as bad as I can remember and we've had a series of droughty years, each one seeming worse than the previous.

I've been adding a coupla truckloads of horse poop a week to the garden since August, and that helps a lot also.

What's not to love about hellebore?
These guys didn't get a drop of extra water in the bottomless sand over the summer, and they are the best looking lenten rose in the area.

The drought was so bad last summer that I didn't get anything from the vegetable garden!

The vegetable garden is doing much better, thanks.

The mahonia is in bloom...

Homminy is hunting voles or something... Good kitty!

While hardy cyclamen blooms, a smaller version of the florists cyclamen...
I grow it for those leaves...

Thanks shadygardener!
The winter gets a lot of thought, I keep my eyes open for anything that has colour.
I don't have to like the plant, if it has colour in the winter, I'll learn to like it!

The winter has been so mild this year that I think a lot of things are coming up early. The hellebores look beautiful, especially considering they didn't get any supplementary water!

Thanks for visiting my blog.
Love your photos of the hellebore orientalis. Mine are only just poking their heads up through the soil.

Even here in Scotland the hellebore season has started so early. I think your carpet of cyclamen leaves is quite impressive - don't blame you growing them for the leaves as the marbling is quite something!

Don't think the agriculture authorities would let us exchange seeds! LOL some in high places don't even like those folks that 'grow their own'.

I'm sure that briza grows wild in parts of the USA so a native seed company would have it.

Thanks for coming by Indie...

Aren't you in zone 8, Crystal? I would expect your garden to look like mine...

Rosie, I just googled briza, and wikipedia says that quaking grass is a cold climate item. So... Prolly wouldn't have done any good to trade seeds, but I'm not sure that trading through the mail would be a problem.
The cyclamen... purdy, purdy...
Usually the hellebores begin blooming in December here. it was last winter that they were late.

Thanks for coming by all...

Enjoyed all the pictures, but wow! Those hellebore blossoms are beautiful. Any idea how they got their name? So, do you have more than one Siamese kitty? The one pictured is Homminy, and in an different picture, you called a kitty Dog. Or are they both the same kitty? Yum! Those vegies look good. I'm glad you finally got some rain.
